"Work on yourself more than you do on your job" Jim Rohn.
Due to the unpredictable nature of many economies and government policies in many underprivileged parts of the world, stability is what we seek in our quest for a meaningful career path. Thus, we want to work hard for a chance to acquire a steady stream of income.
Although This is good, it is important to always remember that it is someone (or an entity) you are working for and are therefore going to account for every action you may undertake. Similarly, the bulk of the earnings would always end up in the pockets of your bosses leaving you with a lower cut.
Even though some people are more than happy with the income they earn, it is also not something guaranteed. To quote a friend of mine, "The work no be your 'poppie' en own" meaning, it is not your father's work. As such, nothing is guaranteed under the tentacles of employment.
These, among others are the more reasons why you should strive to build something substantial for yourself at all times. I am not saying that you shouldn't work at all under someone. But that should not be your priority. Rather, employment should serve as a steppingstone for greater heights.
Think about the way you work on someone else's project if they are paying you. You would want to go above and beyond to impress your boss so that they contact you for future works. That is how a good reputation is built in the corporate world these days.
What if you were just as invested in your own self as you are in your place of work?
Then that would actually be the first significant step in changing your life. I think most people fail to reach their actual potential due to their low self-esteem or confidence levels. Perhaps their breakthrough is just around the corner, and it is just waiting for them to take some small risk to achieve it.
This trait is more prevalent in traditional African homes who might want to take the safe route to financial freedom. But this should not deter you from exploring other opportunities and making bold decisions in life that could potentially be life changing.
Entrepreneurship is taking the world by the storm and the privately own businesses are flourishing because they are well maintained. Similarly, if you the individual establish a business with your blood, sweat and tears, you will put measures in place to ensure its success.
I therefore vouch for self-growth and development to especially if you are in our part of the world with a crippled government structure where things can change at any point in time.
Thank you for your attention.
