A few years ago, the area around the building where I live was completely abandoned, dominated by neglect and plagued by a very negative atmosphere—a place where people just wanted to hurry through as quickly as possible so they wouldn’t have to take in the extent of the deterioration throughout the area. But for some time now, this has changed. Where there used to be vacant lots, there is now a plaza that has become the community’s main gathering place; along the walkways, we find playgrounds, outdoor exercise areas, and a completely different atmosphere.

Unos años atrás, los alrededores del edificio en donde vivo eran espacios totalmente abandonados, dominados por la desidia y plagados de un ambiente muy negativo, en donde solo se pensaba encaminar lo más rápido posible para no tener que detallar el nivel de deterioro de toda la zona, pero de un tiempo para acá esto ha cambiado. En donde había terrenos baldíos, ahora se levanta una plaza que es el punto de encuentro comunitario por excelencia; a lo largo y ancho de las caminerías nos encontramos con parques infantiles, espacios para ejercicios al aire libre y un ambiente totalmente diferente.
The walls are painted, safety is guaranteed, and where we used to hurry along, we can now walk at a leisurely pace, stroll to soak up the sun, and even sit down for a while to rest as the breeze from the western part of the city gently caresses us. I like that everything is colorful, orderly, and well-maintained, that children can have wholesome fun, and that the spaces are properly maintained, ensuring that places like this will endure over time.
Las paredes están pintadas, la seguridad está garantizada y en donde antes apurábamos los pasos, ahora podemos caminar con tranquilidad, pasear para tomar el sol y hasta sentarnos un rato a descansar mientras la brisa del oeste de la ciudad nos acaricia con su ternura. Me gusta que todo se encuentre colorido, ordenado y cuidado, que los niños puedan divertirse sanamente y que los espacios tengan el mantenimiento adecuado, para así garantizar que lugares como este persistan en el tiempo.
Here we find concrete-paved areas, but there’s also natural grass, well-designed paths and walkways where we can move about without fear of tripping or falling into a hole. In some parts of the route, trees are plentiful, and in others, the buildings themselves provide incredible shade, protecting us from the sun’s rays while we take time to relax and breathe deeply.
Aquí nos encontramos con espacios elaborados en concreto, pero también hay grama natural, senderos y caminerías bien diseñadas, en donde podemos desplazarnos sin miedo a tropezarnos o caer en un hueco. En algunos puntos del recorrido, los árboles son abundantes y en otros los mismos edificios nos regalan sombras increíbles, con lo cual podemos estar protegidos de la incidencia solar, mientras disfrutamos de un tiempo para relajarnos y respirar profundo.
All of this can be found in the 23 de Enero neighborhood, specifically in Zone A—an area that may not be very well known but hides some incredible spots. That’s why I can now go for a walk without having to stray too far from home, which is a real privilege; when you don’t have much free time, these options are perfect for getting out and about for a while.
Todo esto se encuentra en la Urbanización 23 de Enero, específicamente en la zona A, un área que quizás es poco conocida, pero que esconde lugares increíbles. Es así como ahora puedo pasear sin necesidad de alejarme mucho de mi casa, lo cual es un verdadero privilegio, ya que cuando no se cuenta con mucha disponibilidad de tiempo, estas opciones son las ideales para esparcirse un rato.
