The tools have to be as sharp as possible. With a dull tool, you will just bash against the ice instead of shaving it, increasing the odds of breaking it.

I did use a piece of PVC tube. You don't want something that has a bottom to make a form so it doesn't stick in.

Thanks for the comment. This is a 4 days contest. The first is spend shoveling and compacting sand and the other 3 sculpting 8 to 5. Yes, this is a solo competition and I'm all by myself.
