Onion planting is something that is seen a lot in this city of Colombia, Villa de Leyva and for a year that I have been here I have participated in its entire planting process..After plowing the land is divided into sections of approx. 1 1/2 wide for the desired length, depending on the number of pounds to be planted.Space is left between the beds to be able to change or to place the irrigation hoses and also the drains.
After throwing the seeds on the bed, carefully spraying them so that the wind does not take them away, a layer of sawdust is placed on it. Sawdust are wood shavings that we can buy or order as gifts from sawmills.
These birutos will help with the growth, so that the wind does not blow them away as well as to keep moisture when it is watered and to cover them a little from direct sun. This will stimulate the germination of the seedling.
This first part will take approximately one month to be transplanted into open ground.Meanwhile, fumigated and compost also play an important role. It is fumigated to kill the unwanted plants that always come out for good irrigation and the compost are small balls that are thrown with your hand over them.
After the month, the plant has already grown about 10 to 15 centimeters, so it is time to transplant to open ground In this land, beds will also be made, but already 2 or 3 meters to place the seedlings.
These plants are detached from the ground with one hand and with the other, a twist is made so that the plant is cut to length by hand. This will stimulate the growth of new leaves.
Here, weeds are also fought with fumigations and the plants are fertilized twice in the following two months, which will take the onion to grow. Plants are very delicate at picking up diseases, too much watering, little watering, a hailstorm, not spraying them or not giving them compost would make a whole crop lose.
Watering is done 1 day yes, two days no, so that the plants do not rot. 15 days before harvesting, the stem is broken by passing an iron pipe over them, so that the bulb widens further and reaches the ideal size for the market.
