Malaria was common throughout the world a century ago. There were extraordinary efforts to eradicate mosquitoes in the US in the 1940s and 1950s as this report from the CDC attests. Eradication is largely a matter of eliminating stagnant water where they breed.

Unfortunately mosquito abatement is more difficult in some parts of the world than others.

BTW: Some mosquitoes are hard to target like tree hole mosquitoes. It turns out mosquitoes like to breed inside old rubber tires. So mosquito born deseases get a lift from motor vehicles that transport the host mosquitoes across continents.
