My goal is to write a daily unsolicited review for HIVE related web sites on my web site Internet Rivers. This project might bring web traffic into the HIVE ecosystem.
In my first review was about creating this account with BlockTrades.us. Creating an account immediately brings up questions about key security.
Users on HIVE need to have a strategy for securing and using ones keys.
HIVE is money. If anyone was to gain access to your keys; they could steal your money. Ask community321 what happens when someone gets their fingers on your keys!!!!
You need to secure your HIVE Keys. But if you lose your HIVE keys you will lose your money.
My strategy is to keep a copy of my HIVE keys in an encrypted file on my local machine. I also keep an encrypted copy on a remote server. You might also consider printing out your keys and keeping a copy in a safety deposit box or other secure location.
People should never share their keys.
But if we can't share our keys, how do can we access the myriad of sites that interface with the Hive blockchain.
So, I decided that my second review would be about HiveSigner and HIVE Keychain.
HiveSigner.com is a site that maintains authorization codes based on your keys. (The program does not store your keys). HiveSigner implements the OAuth authentication standard which is used by Twitter, Google and other popular web sites.
Conclusion - Proper Key Security
The first rule of web security is to never share your keys with third parties. Quite frankly, there is no reason that one should ever have to paste their keys into a web site other than your initial login to wallet.hive.blog .
I keep a local copy of my keys in an encrypted file. Realizing that my local computer could get destroyed or stolen, I also keep copies in an encrypted file on a remote server.
After you secure your keys, you should import your account into HiveSigner.com and install the proper version of HIVE Keychain on your web browser. With these steps complete; you should be able to access all of the wonderful web sites connected to HIVE Keychain with relatively good confidence.
