Yes, despite appearances, what you see in the photos below was, until recently, a lake. Lake Moszne in Polesie National Park, located along the “Dominik” nature trail. This small body of water, with an area of about 17 hectares, reaches a depth of up to 17 meters. The water layer is (or rather was) about one meter thick; the rest consists of layers of lake silt (gytii) several meters deep. The waters of this small lake were home to tench, pike, perch, roach, crucian carp, and the extremely rare and strictly protected species, the mud minnow.
In the 1950s, the lake was surrounded by a ring of spleja approximately 80–150 meters wide, with vegetation characteristic of transitional peatlands. Since that time, the spleja has not expanded significantly, while emergent and reed vegetation has encroached on the lake, occupying about 30% of its former surface area
W latach 50.
Pło (also known regionally as “spleja”)—a mat of peatland vegetation found on water in the form of an overgrown shore or a type of floating island, formed as a result of peat mosses growing along lake shores breaking away. It represents a stage in the overgrowth of a body of water, forming a bog. It is usually a transitional peatland.
A pło surrounds a body of water, sometimes covering it completely so that the water forms a lens beneath it.
The photo below shows a grass snake (Natrix natrix). It is the most common and distinctive snake found in the area around Lake Moszne and throughout the Polish National Park. Grass snakes are excellent swimmers and divers. The photo captures typical behavior—the snake moves just below the water’s surface, with only the tip of its head and nostrils visible. It is easily recognized by two distinct yellow or orange spots on the back of its head. It hunts mainly in water and wetlands, and its primary diet consists of amphibians (frogs, newts) and small fish. It is a completely non-venomous snake and poses no threat to humans. When threatened, it usually escapes by fleeing into the water or playing dead (thanatosis), while secreting a substance with an unpleasant odor. In Poland, it is a strictly protected species.
Zaskrońce doskonale pływają i nurkują.
I'm not sure about this bird; I'm not very good at identifying birds. If the internet is to be believed, it's a bird belonging to the sandpiper family. These birds do not nest at Lake Moszne. They are Arctic species that breed in the distant tundra of Siberia or Scandinavia. They appear in Poland during their migrations to wintering grounds in Western Europe and Africa. As the shores of Lake Moszne dry up or expanses of mud (so-called muddy flats) are exposed, the lake becomes a crucial stopover for them. The birds stay there for just a few days to feed intensively and replenish the fat reserves necessary for the rest of their exhausting flight. They are extremely active. They often forage in flocks, running along the water’s edge, and when startled, they take off instantly and in unison for a coordinated flight.
If anyone can correctly identify this bird, I would be very grateful for the help.
I took all these photos on August 30, 2026, during a short visit to this lake. The information I provided was taken from Wikipedia and the Polesie National Park website.
Photos 1, 2, and 3 were taken with a Pixel 9 Pro XL; the photo of the grass snake was taken with a Nikon D850 and a Tokina 100mm Macro lens; the bird photos were taken with a Nikon D850 and a Tamron G2 150-600 @600. Edited in Lightroom; translated into English using DeepL (free version).
Informacje jakie podałem, zaczerpnąłem z Wikipedii i strony Poleskiego Parku Narodowego.
