Yesterday, my office headed off to the Piska Forest, which is over 220 kilometres from Warsaw. It used to be a long, tiring journey, but now it’s an easy ‘escape from the city’ – just 170 kilometres on the motorway and 50 kilometres on ordinary roads. Getting there, filming what we need and coming back is no problem. So, what was the reason for this trip?

The photograph shows why. It shows a solitary, severely weakened pine tree, with what was until recently an osprey’s

(Pandion haliaetus) nest at the top. The structure has begun to fall apart and will undoubtedly come crashing down in stronger autumn winds. The tree itself is also highly likely to topple over soon.

This is the perfect spot for an osprey: nothing obstructs the view and the nest is safe from attack by hawks or eagles.

We needed to find a similar tree – one taller than the neighbouring ones that would allow the birds to survey the area in all directions. The tree also had to be in very good health, of course. We succeeded: a team of naturalists and foresters selected a suitable tree, and the installation began.

As you can see, it’s quite high up – around 25–30 metres above the ground – on the edge of the forest, and slightly higher than the neighbouring trees. We had to climb up there, remove a few dead branches, and prepare the structure on which the future nest platform will be mounted.

As you can see, the structure is quite simple. Once mounted on a tree, it will be filled with branches to form the sides of the nest and bark will be scattered on the floor. It needs to be hoisted up and securely fastened to the prepared structure first, however.

Najpierw trzeba ją jednak wciągnąć i mocna przymocować do przygotowanej wcześniej konstrukcji.

We were in for a surprise while we were working. Ospreys are extremely skittish migratory birds. They leave Poland for their wintering grounds at the end of August or by mid-September at the latest. So what appeared above us in the sky? Yes, an osprey! The photo isn't great – I tried to make the most of it, but as you know, mobile phones don't have the best telephoto lenses. I didn't take my camera with me as who would have expected to see an osprey in October?

W czasie pracy czekała nas niespodzianka. Rybołowy to ptaki niezwykle płochliwe ptaki wędrowne.

I was wondering what to include at the end. In the end, it was a small, unassuming forest dweller that won out.
Thank you for your attention.
