GNU Octave is a scientific programming language, arguably one alternative to Matlab, although its features and capabilities are not yet compatible with Matlab, but it is capable of performing numerical computations.
Octave is also a cross-platform plotting tool that can run on GNU / Linux, MacOS and Windows.
