"Blood Is Thicker Than Water"-Popular Staments You Don't Agree With(Hive-reachout Weekly Prompt)
“Blood is thicker than water.”
This statement is often used to emphasize the importance of family over friendships or other relationships. It suggests that, no matter what, family should come first no matter the situation even at the cost of your peace or well-being. But let’s pause and really examine this idea.
The original saying is actually longer: "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." Ironically, its full version flips the meaning implying that chosen bonds (like friendships, alliances, and partnerships) can be stronger than family ties.
In today’s world, many people suffer in silence because they feel obligated to stay loyal to wicked or financial draining family members. They’re told things like “but it’s your mother,” or “he’s still your brother,” even when those relationships cause harm.
I believe respect should be mutual. Just because someone is related to you by blood doesn’t give them the right to mistreat, manipulate, or take you for granted. In the same vein, just because someone isn’t blood doesn’t mean they can’t love, support, and stand by you like family.
I’ve seen situations where friends show up more consistently than relatives—offering support, advice, and help without conditions. These chosen bonds often carry more emotional weight and value than forced family ties.
Most times people try to please damily members at their expense. My dad was one of those example. He always tried had to please his mother who was never satisfied. Nothing he does will please her. Because of that he turned him into a money pumping machine. Thanks for the intervention of my mom who help him realize that he doesn't need to please everyone else amd displease yourself.
So NO I don’t agree with the blind loyalty this phrase promotes. Family is important, yes, but your mental health, peace, and self-respect should always come first.
Also never try to please family members at our our expense.
