In softball, if you're the batter, once you hear that crack of the bat hitting the ball, you know its time to run. Decision time. Do you run through first base, maximizing your speed by running past the goal? Or, do you make a little curve, shift your feet slightly, and head straight to second?
Sometimes running past your goals at full speed is the only way to ensure you get there. Sometimes you measure your steps because you know that the "real" goal is Home Base.
