Mount Yengo, the remnant of an ancient volcano, rises in solitude high above the rugged sandstone gorge country that makes up the Yengo National Park. The 668-metre (2,192 ft) table top mountain is part of the Calore Range, in the lower Hunter Valley. According to indigenous mythology the ancestral hero Baiame took his last steps on the mountain before leaping back up into the spirit world. Baiame was the Creator God and Sky Father in the dreaming of several Aboriginal language groups (Kamilaroi, Eora, Darkinjung, and Wiradjuri) and is said to have created all of the mountains, lakes, rivers and caves in the area.
In a stark reminder that people have been walking over this ancient country for at least the past 40,000 years. Ancient aboriginal rock carvings or petroglyphs can be found all across the NSW sandstone country. Yengo National park. NSW, Australia
