AFAIK politicians are in it for (1) Fame, and (2) Money. You get all the news sources speaking your name and an ENORMOUSLY golden parachute when you retire.

Of course, getting into politics requires scads of moolah, so it naturally selects for the wealthy, upperclass, and disconnected from the larger voting throng.
