I don't think of it as sad. I think of it as getting things established at about the point where they're going to get noticed by someone. Rather than make people angry on an assumption, I'd save them the effort by getting the truth out there first. Offensensitivity is real.
I've been called a "gender-bending Tumblrina" and accused of writing "LGBT+ propaganda" in an angry voice and that's the part that's sad. Some folks will just look for an excuse to be mad about things. Frankly, I'd rather it was the incel redditor set. The LGBTIAQ or POC have enough to deal with without my occasional slips of good intent.
...I'm learning, over here, how to write good inclusivity. It's an ongoing process.
