Several of Sensei Twii's students plan a surprise birthday party for hir! -- BKF
"How old is ze anyway?" asked Lynn. "I tried searching, but nobody has an accurate number."
"I think there's a few one-way wormholes involved and temporal confusion[1] in there somewhere." Jem laid out all her research on her datareader. There was a lot of conflicting information. "We could ask, but... That would spoil the surprise."
"We couldn't get the small fire permit anyway," sighed Keit as he crossed off an item on their agenda. "Did we at least find out the Master's favourite flavours?"
Adi, never one for many words, slid across a datachip.
Keit said, "Thanks," as he put the chip into his datareader, sharing the contents with the group. "It's not like Master Twii exactly keeps secrets... it's just that ze doesn't talk about hirself so much."
"What do you gift an immortal who doesn't need anything?" recited Lynn. "The only thing you can... good memories."
Adi spoke for the first time in weeks. "Reckon some Twii's on record are fakes." They did not elaborate.
"I mean, yeah. That tracks," said Jem. "You get a famous entity paired with wide travel distances and dubious verification methods, and then you get impersonators."
"Please don't start again about Count Saint Germain?" moaned Lynn.
"So I have a special interest. So sue me."
"Keep going, I might."
Keit cleared his throat. "Hocus pocus, can we focus? Please? We got the menu flavour profile for the party menu. We could have a breath-operated sparkle stick for a substitute candle. Or a few. Do we do funny hats?"
"Music," murmured Adi. Their hands buzzing in excitement.
"Oh yeah, a playlist of all the bangers of history," said Jem. "I can put that together."
"Can you put it together quietly?" asked Keit. "Master Twii goes here too. Ze could hear us."
Adi shook their head, adding a gesture to their ears, and indicating the restaurant around them.
"See?" said Lynn. "This place is noisy as heck."
"But ze has super hearing and that," countered Keit. "All the senses with fine tuning and so on. We want to keep the surprise, we should at least try to be careful about what we're shouting to the whole concourse?"
On the level above, Master Twii smirked to hirself over hir tea. And vowed to act surprised when hir students finally set it all off. It would be a good memory, and not just for the Master.
