Two humans go to the infirmary with hands covered in blisters. At first, the medic thinks they got heat-burned. But the tests show the blisters are from frostbite. When asked, the humans shrug and went "We wanted to see who could hold ice in our hands the longest, and to make it more fun, we added salt to our hands, first. The leading cause of dangerous injury to Humans was Humans "just goofing off" as they put it. It was so widely known that the EMT's had a special scramble alert for any security pickup that caught the phrase, "Hey, watch this!" There was a bigger one for, "Hold my beer." Humans are notorious that way.
Medik Rentsh sighed and said, "If I wasn't devoted to my work, I'd let you two suffer your consequences." Ze got out the dermal regeneration gear and assessed who had the most damage for small triage.
"The salt was a mistake," admitted Human Kin. "I remembered what salt does five seconds after the ice stuck to my hand."
"That's generally when the science kicks in," contributed Human Jae. "Five seconds after the derp moment."
"Some of this is heat damage, too," noted Medik Rentsh. "What else did you do to yourselves?"
"Well, when the ice stuck to our hands and after we wanted to tap out," began Human Jae.
Human Kin added to the narrative, "We kind'a panicked and thought up dissolving the ice faster with hot water."
"But of course we were numb by then, so... We didn't realise we were hurt until afterwards?"
Medik Rentsh added the relevant data to the files on Humans and, just as an extra measure, recommended round-the-clock Companion supervision to at least restrain other Ships' Humans from pulling self-injurious stunts like this. And, if all else failed, notify the teams responsible for cleaning up the disaster.
"You're both extremely silly, you know that - right?"
"Ohyeah. Silly as heck," agreed Human Kin.
"Silly as a box of kittens on catnip," said Human Jae. "We can't guarantee something similar to this won't happen again, but exactly like this? No way."
"We learn from our mistakes," said Human Kin. "What we learn differs depending on the circumstances."
Accurate, but... really. Could they not do things like this?
