If we look at our society today, we would see the evils perpetuated by people towards their friends and families. So it begs the question "Are we are our brother's keeper". In the Bible, after Adam and Eve were sent out of the Garden of Eden, one of their children Cain was jealous of his brother Abel and so he killed him. God asked Cain about the whereabouts of Abel in Genesis 4:9
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?”
Presently in our world today, we have so many people like Cain. The world has always taught us to mind our own business, if I doesn't affect us directly then we should not interfere.
What does it mean to be your brothers' keeper?
From the words "brother" and "keeper" we can define the meaning of the words. Keeper means to protector, custodian,warden. The word "brother" means our neighbours and people around us. This act of caring for our neighbors is what God demands from every christian. In Galatians 5:13:
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
How to be our Brothers' Keeper
As christians, been our brothers'keeper does not mean we should leave our own responsibilities but we can do that by;
- Love: Love is the greatest law in the Bible. Love conquers all. Showing love with tender heart to all our brethren and non brethren of the church. **Ephesians 4:15 -16
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
When we love each other, there will be no acts of hatred towards each other. We would forgive ourselves easily and we would not experience sinful acts like outbursts of anger, quarreling, slandering e.t.c. Just like the case of Cain and Abel, Cain killed his brother out of Jealousy.
Romans 12:17-21
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
