OTTAWA - The federal government on Monday called for a review of US tariffs on Canadian solar panels under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Last February, the United States imposed tariffs of 30% on imports of solar panels.

"The duties violate the NAFTA rules and were imposed despite the fact that the US International Trade Commission has concluded that imports of solar panels from Canada are not detrimental to the US industry" Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement on Monday.

Criticizing "unfair and illegal" tariffs, Ottawa invokes Chapter 20 of NAFTA, whose dispute settlement mechanism provides for consultations between governments and, ultimately, the composition of an arbitration panel to decide the dispute.
