A few days ago I read an article in a magazine that caught my attention and I thought it was worth knowing more people.
The article in question briefly tells the true story of a 17-year-old climber who suffered an accident during one of his ascents. He was surprised by an avalanche of snow and was partially buried along with another companion.
Several days passed until the rescue teams managed to locate and rescue them and although both survived, due to the freezing, they had to amputate both legs below the knees.
The attitude he adopted, far from resigning himself to living the rest of his life tied to a wheelchair, was not to stop until he could climb a mountain again.
He began by enrolling in the medical school until he reached the degree and later the engineering career.
With the knowledge he possessed, he devoted himself body and soul to designing artificial legs, but with a very important nuance. His legs would not have the purpose of resembling human legs with which he could walk clumsily, his goal was to design robust, light legs that could do what human legs do, although his appearance did not have much to do with human legs . The nuance that he added as a criterion to design his legs was the functionality, that is to say that they could jump, run, push, etc., even if for that the appearance was not human. Changed the appearance criteria (external), for the utility (internal).
The result was that he managed to design legs that have allowed him to climb again. It has a closet full of legs designed specifically for each activity, climbing on rock, climbing on ice, etc.
His work did not end here, since he created a company dedicated to research and design new "bionic" legs, suitable for each activity.
At this point is where we link with a second story of improvement. The story of an athlete who also lost both legs and who was not resigned to stop running. His name is Oscar Pistorius.
Thanks to one of the bionic designs, carbon fiber legs, which have allowed him to stand out in the world of high competition, to the point that some consider that it is the other athletes who are at a disadvantage in front of him.
What things are, a person with a significant disability has transformed into a person with a surplus value that makes others feel disadvantaged.
With these stories, we can see that we do not have anything impossible, nor should we give anything for lost. We have to change the depression for the overcoming. If we want, we can.
