Thanks man. It was a delicate conversation for me. When they first approached me to do it I was thinking, first off, I don't want this to be like an SJW, "we are so oppressed", or a cultural 'wagging-of-the-finger'.
I only wanted to do it if I could express:
- gratitude for the employer I have, and...
- joy I have for my heritage, including how I was raised, what I experienced, etc.
Here's a side note about culture and the modern confusion around "identity":
It seems with the internet and global inter-connectivity, we are all just looking around and ahead to see who we are, not because the answer is out "there", but because we are confused by all the pretty colors... does that make sense?
Its like distraction... if the real question is "who are we", then both Americans and Canadians have heritage, and history to look and learn from in answering that question. So we should start with that before we look to the world outside for our "identity" and culture.
Not because we are better, or worse, but because each history is its own.
Wow that's so artsy fartsy I almost erased it after I wrote it, but I hope you see what I'm trying to say.
Thanks for stopping by.
