Operation Carlota - Cuba in Angola (Gabriel García Márquez) [ENG/ESP]

Hello everyone. In my recent quest to collect these free weekly books from the "25 for the 25" collection, this week's book immediately caught my attention as soon as I saw the title and author. It's worth remembering that this collection is full of renowned writers, and having the opportunity to own one of their books is simply fantastic, in my opinion. The author of this book is none other than the great Gabriel García Márquez, of whom I already own two other books. So today I'm sharing this new acquisition with you: "Operation Carlota: Cuba in Angola."

En mi reciente misión de conseguir estos libros de entrega gratuita semanal de la colección "25 para el 25", el ejemplar de esta semana fue uno que, desde que leí el título y su autor, atrajo por completo mi atención, y es que hay que recordar que esta colección está llena de escritores reconocidos, de los cuales tener la oportunidad de obtener un libro de estos es simplemente algo genial desde mi punto de vista, y es que el autor de este libro no es otro que el gran Gabriel García Márquez, del cual ya poseo otros 2 libros más, por lo que hoy les traigo este nuevo libro adquirido, el cual es "Operación Carlota". Cuba en Angola".

This is an extensive report written by the author and originally published in 1977 in Tricontinental magazine (issue 53) and also in Triunfo magazine in January of that year. Later, it was published as a book/pamphlet by publishers such as Mosca Azul in the same year and recently as part of a 25-volume series promoting reading among young people, an initiative of the Fondo de Cultura Económica (Economic Culture Fund). This is a necessary piece of history, a narrative of the 1975 military intervention by Cuban troops in Angola. It is very well described and specific, with direct testimonies and a detailed chronology, despite being a slim volume, which is surprising and a positive aspect.

Siendo este un extenso reportaje escrito por el autor y publicado originalmente en 1977 en la revista Tricontinental (edición 53) y también en la revista Triunfo en enero de ese año. Posteriormente, fue publicado como libro/folleto por editoriales como Mosca Azul en el mismo año y recientemente como parte de estos 25 tomos para el incentivo de la lectura en jóvenes por parte de la iniciativa del Fondo de Cultura Económica, y siendo este un poco de necesaria historia, es una narración de lo que fue una intervención militar ocurrida en 1975 por parte de tropas cubanas en Angola, siendo muy bien descrito y específico con testimonios directos y una cronología detallada, a pesar de ser un delgado libro, cosa que sorprende y es positiva.

With its simple yet elegant design, the cover of this book feels like a beautiful work of art that draws the eye and allows us to appreciate the subtle yet powerful contrast of colors, effectively conveying the book's theme. As with all the books in this collection, the back cover includes a brief summary of the plot, as well as a short but concise bibliography of the author. I feel this summary is very well done, and at only 31 pages, it's one of the shortest in this first part of the collection, but no less important. Although it, like the others, isn't illustrated, it's richly enriched with text.

Con un diseño simple pero elegante, la portada de este libro siento que es un bello arte que logra atraer y nos permite detallar un poco ese contraste de colores, sencillo pero contundente con lo que es transmitir de qué va el libro. Como en todos los ejemplares de esta colección, en la parte de atrás nos trae un pequeño resumen de lo que es la trama del mismo, así como una pequeña pero concisa bibliografía del autor, la cual siento que es un resumen muy acertado, y con tan solo 31 páginas de texto es de los más delgados de lo que es esta primera parte de la colección, pero no por eso el menos importante, pues aunque este, al igual que los demás, no está ilustrado, está muy bien enriquecido a nivel de texto.

Even at the beginning of the reading, we are shown a section explaining its first publications in 1977 and in which magazines, which gives us a better appreciation of how long-standing yet important the report is, since it allows us to approach this topic in a calmer way and with a better understanding of what these events were and the great impact they had, not presenting it as a sensitive subject at all, especially given everything that is mentioned, so it is undoubtedly a calmer and better way to delve into these topics (this is because it is normal that in topics or books about historical events we do not have that full interest in learning and reading).

Y es que incluso al iniciar la lectura se nos muestra una sección donde explica las primeras publicaciones de este en su año de 1977 y en qué revistas, lo cual nos hace tener una mejor apreciación de lo longevo pero importante que es el reportaje, ya que este nos permite abordar este tema de una manera más tranquila y con una mejor visión de lo que son estos eventos y el gran impacto que tuvieron, no siendo para nada un tema delicado y más por todo lo que se menciona, por lo que sin duda es una forma más tranquila y mejor para adentrarnos en estos temas (esto porque es normal que en temas o libros sobre sucesos históricos no tengamos ese interés del todo por conocer y leer).

I always enjoy it when collections like this include books about history, as it's good to learn and see it from the perspective of authors like Gabriel García Márquez. I feel it's a way to blend his familiar style with a narrative different from his usual style, making this opportunity to read a report definitely a positive one. Siempre es de mi agrado cuando en colecciones así hay libros referentes a la historia, ya que es bueno aprender y verlo desde la perspectiva de autores como Gabriel García Márquez. Siento que es una vía para mezclar el estilo conocido de él, pero desde una narrativa distinta a lo acostumbrado de sus libros, siendo esta oportunidad de leer un reportaje sin duda positiva.
