I believe AI has no spirit. A buddha is a teacher at a spirit level. So would need to be an organic life form. Theoretically Maitreya could be a whale or other life form, but since all we call Buddhas have been humans, by the way we are defining the term it seems reasonable that a collective as Buddha would necessarily be a collective of humans. That said, it need not be a group as we currently think of groups. It may be simply the amplification of how group efforts are divinely supported. In the same way a singular Buddha of an age awakens many individuals to enlightenment, perhaps Maitreya Buddha skips the singular entity all together and simply awakens group energies of all who cultivate the path.
