At the end of September we flew from Canmore, Alberta to Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in BC to stay three nights in the Naiset Huts. The Provincial Park is part of the Rocky Mountains Range and lies on the BC side of the British Columbia/Alberta border.
When we originally booked (pre-covid) we had to share our 8 person cabin with other hikers but due to social distancing we had the whole cabin to ourselves (which is great when you're a light sleeper like myself). The cabins were basic with beds, a table and a fireplace. But it was everything we needed/wanted and felt like a palace compared to the alternative: a tent.
We were extremely lucky with weather too. A few days leading up to our trip there was a lot snow and cold weather on the mountain, but for our entire three-night stay we had warm sunny days and mild nights, which we spent by the fire drinking wine and whiskey.
Days were spent hiking, and a few hikes that stand out are Wonder Pass, The Nublet (our only spot of bad weather), The Meadows, and Sunburst Lake. Wonder Pass was a personal favourite and as it was larch season the trails were golden with larch needles. It was like following the yellow brick road.
We hiked up to The Nublet on our second night to watch the sunset and, while it was crazy windy, the sunset was spectacular. Just as the sun went below the horizon and the pinks started to disappear from the clouds, the sky went a spooky purple colour. I had never seen anything like it.
Sunburst Lake and The Meadows were also popular sunset locations for us.
Our adventure was perfect (except for when I misplaced Ryan's phone. Ooops!) and I would highly recommend the Naiset Huts to anyone visiting Mount Assiniboine. We have been lucky enough to experience all accommodation options in the park(The Lodge $$$, Naiset Huts $$, and camping $) and the huts have been a favourite. Hiking in and out is also an option, but if you are able to fly in you can save all your energy for exploring when you get there.
