For small river fish, you don't need anything expensive. If you wanted something nicer, I would suggest St. Croix. They have an ultra light river rod.

You could go with less costly brands like Shakespeare, Berkely, or Ugly Stick. If you're talking small fish like bluegill (panfish or bream), go ultralight with rod, reel, and line. It makes catching them so much fun. Little fish can put up a big fight that way! 🙂
