I honestly don't want to write about this. But if don't, I probably won't be able to write about anything at all.

Yesterday wasn't an unusual Friday, for most of the day. I went to work early. My wife took the day off and did some cleaning while I was out.

When I got home, she took the kids with her to CostCo to stock up on food and other household needs. The car is always loaded up from these trips, so I joined in to help when they returned.

My Oldest Son Stepped On Dash

As we were bringing the boxes of groceries from the garage to the kitchen, we pass through our open patio. This leads to our back screen door and into the dining area. We've been extra careful about keeping that screen door closed so that Dash couldn't get outside.

After the first couple trips, Devin went in with a box and closed the screen behind him. Dash flew down on the ground and attacked his foot. She gave him a nip on the toe and in his shuffling, he came down with his other foot right on top of her.

I didn't see it happen, but I saw Dash writhing on the floor. Running immediately over to her, I knew she was most likey wounded beyond recovery.

To The Vet In Fucking Traffic

Only a few seconds after this happened, I scooped up Dash and held her tenderly in my hand. I never let go of her as we tried to get to the vet as fast as we could.

Dash was probably gone before we even got a block down our street, though I could feel her warmth all the way to the Vet. They weren't allowing people inside because of Covid, but a nurse came quickly out to retrieve our bird.

I called the number on the door to get my paperwork started, but didn't get any further than my name and phone number. The nurse had come back out to give us the bad news.

We Brought Her Back And Paid Our Respects

Though we're hurt from the loss of another pet, my wife and I worry more about Devin. I made the decision to bring Dash back home with us so Devin could take some peace in what had happened.

He picked a spot out back and we found a small box for Dash to lie in. Helping me out, we dug a pretty deep hole next to a large bush. We had a small family ceremony, each saying a few words of fondness and farewell.

That's It With Pets For Now

After losing our first bird Aurora and now Dash, I have to say I've had it. I can't stand coming to love a wonderful creature only to lose another. It's time for a period of reflection and refocus. Perhaps Dash came into our lives too soon. I blame myself for not seeing the accident coming beforehand and taking steps to prevent it.

I'll overthink this one for way too long if I let myself go on. But it won't bring back Dash or help Devin process the event in any kind of a healthy manner. So....I'm put it down in words this morning to try to leave it right here.

Goodbye Dash & thank you for bringing joy to my life. I'll see you in a little while.
