Seikilos epitaph
Seikilos epitath is the worlds oldest complete musical composition. This historic artifact is dated between:
200 BC and
100 AD.
Its popularly believed that an ancient Greek musician named seiklos, created this composition in remembrance of his young wife Euterpe who died in child birth. The beginning of the inscription reads:
"I am an icon in stone. Seikilos placed me here as an everlasting sign of deathless remembrance". Archaeologists originally found this tombstone in the ancient Hellenistic town of Tralles near Aydın, Turkey, not far from Ephesus.
Lyrics
When the inscription is translated into English it reads:
"While you live, shine
have no grief at all
life exists only for a short while
and time demands an end."
The song is a clear reminder from the past to enjoy life; It is somewhat ironic that the oldest composition is about the tolls of the passage of time.
