Security footage of Istanbul metro station has captured the terrifying moment commuter was swallowed whole by failed escalator.One man, Mehmet Ali Erik, at that moment stepped on but a section opened up leaving large gaping hole that swallowed him.He clinches onto the handrails as he swings above the gaping hole.Witnesses stood for a few moments before they rushed to the edge of the hole and looked down to check on Mr. Erik's condition.
The incident happened during rush hour on February 22nd at the Ayazaga Metro station in Istanbul.
Mehmet Ali Erik, was trapped under the metal steps for an hour before he was freed by firefighters.An ambulance then took him to the hospital, where he received treatment for minor injuries.Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality had reportedly put up a warning sign near the malfunctioned escalator before the accident occurred, but it failed to prevent people from using it because of rush hour.
