I hope all is well. Yesterday, due to the bad weather, I spent part of my day inside my room, thinking about new adventures and future trips. Among my thoughts, these photos emerged, and I wanted to share them with you here.
Some time ago, I had the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable journey in the vicinity of Nimes, France, exploring a magical place called Salin d'Aigues-Mortes. Actually, I had gone to that area for a small tour of France, but in the end, aside from visiting this place, I mainly stayed in Nimes. Since my childhood, France had held an irresistible charm for me, and this trip only reinforced my love for this captivating nation. I have always had a great rapport with the French and have always felt comfortable in their country.
Salin d'Aigues-Mortes is a place of extraordinary natural beauty with a history dating back to Roman times. This ancient salt marsh has a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries. Its primary activity, salt production, not only made this place a valuable resource but also a crucial point in the European economy. It seems that this place was very important because salt was once crucial for food preservation.
As I explored this natural wonder, I could admire the vast salt pans where seawater is slowly evaporated to yield precious crystalline salt. This production technique, inherited from the ancient Romans, has made Salin d'Aigues-Mortes a world-renowned salt production center. The salt produced here was exported throughout Europe, and I believe it continues to significantly contribute to the region's economy. Now, I understand why salt is so important for France.
It would have been interesting to take a tour to understand how salt production works, something I've never done even in the numerous salt pans in Italy. However, I noticed that most people who visit this place come here to take photos to share on social media with the backdrop of the pink lake. Honestly, I didn't do this because I don't see the point in it.
One of the most captivating attractions of Salin d'Aigues-Mortes is the fortified city of Aigues-Mortes, located nearby. This imposing city wall, built in the 11th century, reflects the medieval rulers' determination to protect this important salt production site. The mighty walls stand majestically, encircling the city and creating a spectacular view. I didn't visit it, as you may know from my previous posts, as I'm not a huge fan of art and architecture; unfortunately, I easily get bored with such things.
I hope the photos I took during my journey capture the natural beauty of this place as well as the magnificence of the medieval walls of Aigues-Mortes.
My trip to Salin d'Aigues-Mortes was a beautiful experience that will forever be etched in my memory. The beauty of nature and the rich history of this area left me speechless, reminding me of how much there is still to discover in the world. Anyway, I recommend visiting this place to anyone who has the opportunity. I even saw that some people come here on horseback, so there might be a nearby stable where you can rent horses.
Certainly, as soon as I have some free time, I will return to France. There are still many places to explore!
