By the month of August 2013, almost 10 years ago now, I was starting to work for the first time in a real company, under a signed contract and with a fixed schedule and salary; I had always been working on my own but this job opportunity came as a surprise and I took it without knowing much about what it would really be like to work there nor having much experience in the area.

Para el mes de Agosto del año 2013, hace casi 10 años ya, comenzaba a trabajar por primera vez en una empresa real, bajo un contrato firmado y con un horario y sueldo fijo; siempre había estado trabajando por mi cuenta pero esta oportunidad de trabajo llegó de sorpresa y la tomé sin saber mucho de lo que sería realmente trabajar ahí ni tener mucha experiencia en el área.

Today I want to make my first post in this community to tell you about my experience working with children for the years I was an employee in a kids park in a busy shopping mall in my city, how that place was managed and what I learned from being there.

Hoy quiero hacer mi primer post en esta comunidad para hablarles de cómo fue mi experiencia trabajando con niños por los años en lo que estuve como empleado en un parque infantil en un concurrido Centro Comercial de mi ciudad, cómo se manejaba el parque y lo que aprendí estando ahí.

It all started when I met the owner of this park on a trip, at my cousin's house, who at that time, in 2013, was an employee of the same park but in another city. That day she told me that she was about to open a new park in the city where I live and that she was interested in looking for new people to be part of that new park; I gave her my information, sent my resume and did not expect to receive a response.

Todo comenzó cuando conocí a la dueña de este parque en un viaje, en casa de mi prima, quien para ese entonces, en el 2013, era empleada de ese mismo parque pero en otra ciudad. Ese día ella me comentó que estaba próxima a abrir un nuevo parque en la ciudad en la que yo vivo y que estaba interesada en buscar gente nueva para que formara parte de ese nuevo parque; le di mis datos, envié mi currículo y no esperé recibir respuesta.

By the month of August I got an email back, telling me that I had an interview to get the job. I went a few days later and since that day I was hired. Little by little the other new employees came to the park and we started working together. We didn't have the owners in the city, they lived 2 hours away from where we worked, so, practically, the park was in our hands and we had to do everything ourselves.

Para el mes de Agosto me respondió por email, diciéndome que tenía una entrevista de para obtener el empleo. Fui a los pocos días y desde entonces quedé contratado. Así fueron llegando poco a poco los otros nuevos empleados al parque y comenzamos a trabajar juntos. No teníamos a los dueños en la ciudad, ellos vivían a 2 horas de donde trabajábamos nosotros, así que, prácticamente, el parque estaba en nuestras manos y todo lo debíamos hacer nosotros 3.

We were only 3 employees, working from 10am until 9pm, approximately, each one of us had 2 days a week off, except for the weekends when we all had to be together in the park because the amount of work we had during those 2 days was unbelievable. And although we were not always a team that got along at all times, we managed to get by and get the job done right.

Solo éramos 3 empleados, trabajando de 10am hasta las 9pm, aproximadamente, cada uno de nosotros tenía libre 2 días a la semana, salvo los fines de semana que todos debíamos estar juntos en el parque ya que la cantidad de trabajo que teníamos durante esos 2 días era increíble. Y aunque no siempre fuimos un equipo que se la llevó bien en todo momento, logramos salir adelante y hacer el trabajo correctamente.

Our job was simple, keep the park clean at all times, serve customers, be alert to any situation that might occur inside or outside the park and take care of the cash register; although many times it was much more than that. We were located in a busy part of the Mall, a lot of people were passing by, we had no physical location, we were literally in the hallway of the Mall, unprotected from everything.

Nuestro trabajo era simple, mantener limpio el parque en todo momento, atender a los clientes, estar alerta ante cualquier situación que pudiera ocurrir dentro o fuera del parque y cuidar la caja registradora; aunque muchas veces era mucho más que eso. Estábamos situados en una parte concurrida del Centro Comercial, mucha gente pasaba por ahí no teníamos un local físico, estábamos literalmente en el pasillo del Centro Comercial, desprotegidos de todo.

We were not a daycare park, we did not take care of the children, although many times parents would leave them with us and disappear; without asking us, they thought we were taking care of them, when in fact we were not, and although they were informed that they should stay, they did not always do so. The time inside the park for the children was 15 minutes and they could play for 15 minutes more and they would be recharged for another 15 minutes to continue playing there. We had children who lasted 1 hour or more inside the park and when their time was up, they did not want to leave, they wanted to stay even longer playing with other kids.

No éramos un parque guardería, no cuidábamos a los niños, aunque muchas veces los padres los dejaban con nosotros y se desaparecían; sin preguntarnos, creían que nosotros cuidábamos de ellos, cuando en realidad no era así y aunque se les informaba que debían quedarse, no siempre lo hacían. El tiempo dentro del parque para los niños era de 15 minutos y podían estar jugando 15 minutos más y se les recargaba ese otro tiempo para que continuarán jugando ahí. Tuvimos niños que duraban 1 horas o más dentro del parque y cuando se terminaba su tiempo, no querían irse, sino quedarse aún más tiempo jugando con otros niños.

Our busiest days of the week were Friday, Saturday and Sunday; we attended to a large number of children, some who were already repeat customers and others who were new, we were the only playground in the Mall for children of that age (from 1 to 5 years old). The experience of working with children of that age is very present in my life, I learned things from them and with them that will serve me for the future, I am sure of that. Holidays were also days with a lot of work and in December we did not stop, there were always many and only 3 employees was not enough, so when a holiday approached, another person was hired to help us keep the dynamics of work.

Nuestros días más ocupados de la semana eran viernes, sábado y domingo; atendíamos un gran cantidad de niños, unos que ya se hacían clientes recurrentes y otros que eran nuevos, eramos el único parque infantil en el Centro Comercial para niños de esa edad (de 1 a 5 años). La experiencia de trabajar con niños de esa edad la tengo bien presente en mi vida, aprendí cosas de ellos y con ellos que me servirán para el futuro, estoy seguro de eso. Los días festivos eran también días con mucho trabajo y en Diciembre no parábamos, siempre eran muchos y solo 3 empleados no era suficiente, por eso, cuando se acercaba una fecha festiva, se contrataba a otra persona para que nos ayudara a mantener la dinámica de trabajo.

I worked in that park for almost 2 years and I was able to learn a lot, the most I learned was working with the public, although I did not always have the best experience; and although I lived moments where I wanted to leave everything, I always came back. Those who have worked with customer service know what I mean. Beyond working with children, I think that was the easiest part of my job, dealing with the parents was really the challenge of that job.

Fueron casi 2 años los que trabajé en ese parque y pude aprender mucho, lo más que aprendí fue trabajar con el público, aunque con lo que no siempre tuve la mejor experiencia; y aunque viví momentos donde quise dejar todo, siempre regresaba. Quienes han trabajado con atención al cliente, saben a lo que me refiero. Más allá de trabajar con niños, creo que esa fue la parte más fácil de mi trabajar, lidiar con los padres fue realmente el desafía de ese empleo.

I have stored in my memory a thousand and one stories that happened to me while working, alone or accompanied. Undoubtedly the most difficult moments were the days I worked alone, without help from any of my colleagues. Those shifts were eternal and the work was not the same, there was less flow in those days, so only one employee had to work and I had to cover that shift for many months.

Tengo almacenado en mi memoria mil y un historias que me ocurrieron trabajando, solo o acompañado. Sin duda los momentos más difíciles fueron los días que trabajaba yo solo, sin ayuda de ninguno de mis compañeros. Esos turnos eran eternos y el trabajo no era el mismo, había menos flujo en esos días, por eso debía trabajar un solo empleado y a mi me tocó cubrir ese turno por muchos meses.

One of the experiences that shook me the most happened more than once, a stampede of people coming towards us because there had been an incident in the center of the Mall, fireworks had gone off without warning and the people who were near the place where the fireworks were launched, thought they were gunshots, so they ran to take refuge in the premises of the Mall and this caused everyone in the Mall began to run desperate not knowing what was happening. This happened for some time and I got used to it, although it was never really something to worry about because it was a misunderstanding and not a major incident.

Una de las experiencias que más me sacudió ocurrió más de una vez, una estampida de personas ocurriendo hacia nosotros porque había ocurrido un incidente en centro de Centro Comercial, unos fuegos artificiales se había disparado sin previo aviso y las personas que estaban cerca del lugar donde lanzaron esos fuegos artificiales, creyeron que se trataban de disparos, por lo que salieron corriendo a refugiarse en los locales del Centro Comercial y esto ocasionó que todos en el Centro Comercial comenzaran a correr desesperados al no saber que era lo que ocurría. Esto ocurrió durante algún tiempo y me fui acostumbrando, aunque nunca fue algo realmente para preocuparme porque se trataba de un mal entendido y no de un incidente mayor.

I had the opportunity to meet fathers and mothers dedicated to their children, I met boys and girls that to this day I remember with funny and amusing anecdotes as well as others that were not at all. Although nothing was perfect during those years that I worked there, I believe that I was taught and prepared for things that will be useful in the not too distant future in my life.

Tuve la oportunidad de conocer padres y madres dedicados a sus hijos, conocí niños y niñas que hasta hoy recuerdo con anécdotas graciosas y divertidas como otras que no lo fueron en lo absoluto. Aunque nada fue perfecto durante esos años que trabajé ahí, creo que me enseñaron y me prepararon para cosas que me serán útiles en un futuro no muy lejano en mi vida.

By April 2015, the park closed its doors and although it was never the ideal job for me, it was the perfect job I needed to learn and get to know a little more about work life in general and what I was now going to expect and need in my next job. That was my first and last contract job, since then, I have returned to self-employment and hope in God I will continue to do so for the rest of my life.

Para Abril del año 2015, el parque cerró sus puertas y aunque nunca fue el trabajo ideal para mi, me el trabajo perfecto que necesitaba para aprender y conocer un poco más de la vida laboral en general y lo que ahora iba a esperar y necesitar en mi próximo trabajo. Ese fue mi primer y último empleo bajo contrato, desde entonces, he vuelto a trabajar por mi cuenta y espero en Dios seguir haciéndolo por el resto de mi vida.
