Hello, you are absolutely right about networking. It is very important to be near the right people. Also the capacity to recover yourself from failures is very important.
If you are starting you may want start some planning, damarysvibra@damarysvibra is producing some material about business model and I am doing the same but with business plan. I invite you to take a look, you may find some useful info there.
Finally I always wander how a person becomes a clothing designer. How do you study that?
