Yes they are very large. I read a book called 'Pictures and Tears' by James Elkins that talks about this phenomenon and I think his paintings have this effect because they are either very expressive filled with colorful brush strokes or extremely dark and empty like the paintings he created towards the end of his life. People feel these extreme emotions that he felt when viewing his paintings in real life and it is often too much for them to handle.
