Science is better or oil?!?
A very readable and instructive article from the New York Times
By Thomas Friedman
Occasionally I am asked:
"Apart from your own country, which other country are you interested in?"
I always had an answer:
"Taiwan!"
And people ask, "Taiwan?" "Why Taiwan?"
The answer is very simple. Because Taiwan is a rocky outcrop in a sea full of stormy waves and without natural resources to live. It even has to import sand and gravel from China for construction.
Despite all this, it has the fourth largest financial reserves in the world. Because instead of digging the earth and extracting everything that comes up, Taiwan explores the minds and thoughts of 23 million Taiwanese, their talents, their energy, and their intelligence, both men and women.
I always tell my friends in Taiwan:
You are the happiest people in the world, how did you become so happy?
You have no oil, no iron ore, no forest, no diamonds, no gold, only a small amount of coal and natural gas reserves.
That is why you have developed a culture of strengthening your skills
The work that has been proven today is the most valuable and only real renewable resource in the world.
