Microsoft has been preparing for a modular future of Windows for some time. The idea is a core OS that is adaptable across platforms but more hardware-dependent. The new Windows version for traditional PC is currently being developed under the project name "Polaris".
News about the secret Windows project now comes from the online magazine Windows Central. Accordingly, Microsoft is working under the code name Polaris on a new version of Windows 10 for desktop PC. The name has surfaced once in the past year and fits thematically by the reference to astronomy wonderful to the parent secret project called "Andromeda", which is now also known as Windows Core OS.
This new, modern part of WCOS is called Polaris. According to Windows Central sources, Microsoft is building this brand new version of Windows 10 specifically for devices such as desktops, laptops, and 2-in-1 devices. Fully based on UWP, Polaris is Microsoft's first truly modern Windows operating system for the traditional PC form factor. It removes old legacy components and features in favor of a lighter operating system with a focus on battery life and performance.
Release 2019?
According to the information from Windows Central, Polaris should become a reality in the coming year. Microsoft has targeted the year 2019 for the first release of Polaris. Target audiences may then be casual users, more likely those who are not gamers or power users and would opt for devices like a surface laptop.
