I mean, I have not actually worked at a gym since the demise of my marriage.
Or, is it the gym was the demise of my marriage.
See, I was managing a gym in Toronto for the first time. And between the two of us, it was 100k a year.
We were getting paid, and I was turning the gym around. Except, that's not what the owner really wanted to happen.
See, from what I understand, the lady that owned the gym had been "trying to make it work" for a long time.
At one point it had been started up by some well known guys that were bodybuilders and she had taken it over at some point when they turned out to be not the greatest business wise.
The only thing I didn't know was, she was using it as a front to run money through.
She didn't want it to work.
She was an accountant and her husband was a big building contractor.
Schools, city contracts etc.
Well, 4 months in and the gym is starting to work, no matter what crazy stuff she was pulling.
My ex came in one time to my office (door open policy for staff) and said, "wow, I don't know how you are doing this" and all I could do was smile.
Unconscious competence at a skill. Once you have done something for a long time, you just are able to do it.
Anyway, one day, the owner walks into my office and she has a lady in tow. A lady I introduced her to through a very good friend that runs a very successful health business here in the greater Toronto area..in fact, he has two places now.
She let me go and gave that lady the gym manager job and the next day fired my wife...by blackberry message.
She was smart to do that. Redheads can explode when crossed;)
So, she got a new gym designed for her, a lady to blame the failure of the old one on (the replacement lasted a few weeks from what I heard) and then she opened up the new 45,000 sq ft facility I had designed for her down the road in the old Billy bee honey factory.
And I got divorced shortly afterwards.
So, now it's literally ten years later, and I am starting at the bottom this time. But, I love it.
See the gym itself,is what I love. And this place is literally called "the gym" and it's a real gym.
I'll give you a tour at some point. And you can check out the first piece of equipment I fixed over the weekend. Which gets me back to why my heart was in my mouth.
I had spent More than a few minutes thInking, "I hope he got my message about it and why I didn't tighten all the bolts fully.." And stuff like that.
Well, I walked in this morning and the owner was just coming onto the floor to train a client and he said "wow, that was an awesome job on the rig!
See, unconciously competent at anything gym related.
Now to just put my NEW "slow and steady wins the race" attitude and personality to work.
It's like fine wine....
The early bird gets the worm but he has to pick the rIght spot and not go off half cocked.
