Was pgp the beginning of the blockchain and cryptocurrency?

Way, way back, in the late nineties, I was using pgp to encrypt my emails so I could distribute anabolics around the globe and not get caught out (I've not done stuff like that in a long time...hence the openness) and, I was wondering, was pgp the beginnings of the cryptography (blowfish) that is now being used to run the block chain? If not, is there any relation at all in the two technologies histories?
