The noval coronavirus also known as Covid-19 has created a devastating impact on the globe. On December 8, 2019 this virus was first identified in Wuhan, China. The virus spread across other countries including my country, through an Italian citizen who returned from Milan for his work in Nigeria(first index case). Which lead the WHO declaring it as a Pandemic. In this discussion we will look into various aspects of this virus, it's transmission, severity, symptoms, prevention, testing, treatment, and the society impact.
Transmission: Covid-19 is transmitted through the droplets of an infected person when he coughs or sneeze without covering mouth. The droplets travels through air and when inhaled by people nearby the contact. This virus can also be contacted through touching surfaces that are contaminated, spreading through symptomatic and asymptomatic making the transmission control a difficult one.
Severity: People with underlying health condition and the elderly ones are at high risk while other cases may be mild.
Symptoms: The symptoms vary in people and include headache, fever, cough, muscle ache, difficulty in breathing, loss of taste or smell. Noting that some people that contact this virus are asymptomatic meaning the symptoms do not show in such cases.
Prevention: It's important to practice social distancing, make use of facemask, avoid large gathering, practice washing of hand with soap and water every twenty seconds, and making use of hand sanitizer. These measures are important in preventing the spread of this virus.
Testing: For Covid-19 test, the gold standard is PCR test. There's still the antigen test.
Treatment: Good for a rapid lateral flow test was and still advised if there are symptoms. If in any case the test is negative advise is for more 3 rapid lateral flow test to be carried out.
Health Impact: The hospitals lack bed spaces and intensive care units were needed as the health facilities were stretched to it's limit. The need for Ventilators went on high demand. The need for health workers increased while the frontline workers worked tirelessly in savings lives as most of them lost their lives while trying to save others.
Economic impact: This global pandemic broke the chain of the the global distribution. Businesses struggled to survive as lockdown was imposed by some countries. Industries shut down and many workers lost their jobs.
Many activities and people's lives was held at still, as no occasion had more than fifty people in attendance.
