As a good student, my dining out ended up being a financial sacrifice, and I had to settle for 2-for-1 hot dogs with my friends. I had to save my bolivars and convert my dollars to pay for copies, transportation, or film sets. Eating out was a luxury my college bank account simply couldn’t afford.

Hoy tuve un encuentro gastronómico necesario. Me encontré con un amigo que no solo comparte mi carrera, sino algo mucho más difícil de encontrar: el amor por el sushi. Porque sí, aunque parece que seguimos las tendencias, todavía hay mucha gente que nos mira raro cuando decimos que amamos el pescado crudo y los palillos. Encontrar un amigo comunicador, que entienda la logística de una buena pieza de sushi, es un milagro.

Today I had a much-needed culinary outing. I met up with a friend who not only shares my profession, but also something much harder to find: a love of sushi. Because yes, even though it seems like we’re following trends, there are still plenty of people who give us strange looks when we say we love raw fish and chopsticks. Finding a fellow communicator who understands the art of a good piece of sushi is a miracle.

Fuimos a Kai Sushi Bar, en el Nautilus Jardín Gourmet, aquí en mi hermosa ciudad de Valencia. El ambiente es de esos que te hacen sentir que la inversión por la comida vale la pena. Tienen música alegre y una tv gigante con una película japonesa o china.

We went to Kai Sushi Bar, located in the Nautilus Jardín Gourmet, here in my beautiful city of Valencia. The atmosphere is the kind that makes you feel like the food is well worth the price. They have upbeat music and a giant TV playing a Japanese or Chinese movie.

Ninja Roll: Este fue el favorito de mi amigo. Salmón fresco, cebollín y ese toque delicado del tempura con salsa unagui. Cada bocado de las 10 piezas que traía la ración nos hacía confiar que no nos equivocamos de elección de lugar.

Para bajar el fuego del tempura, pedí un té de jamaica con limón. Estaba delicioso que casi olvido mi protocolo de comunicadora y me lo tomaba de un solo trago antes de la foto.

To cool down from the tempura, I ordered a hibiscus tea with lemon. It was so delicious that I almost forgot my professional etiquette and drank it all in one gulp before taking the photo.

Pasar de ahorrar con esfuerzo para el almuerzo a sentarme hoy a escribir sobre los sabores de la ciudad es una de esas pequeñas victorias que saben mejor con un roll en la mano. Esta vez, el gesto fue aún más especial porque mi amigo fue quien invitó, cubriendo la cuenta de 41$.
