안녕하세요 현우입니다.
이번 포스팅은 조금 민감한 이야기일 수 있어서 인사를 먼저 드립니다. 이 글은 제 개인적인 견해이기 때문에 '아... 그냥 저 사람은 저렇게 생각하는구나' 정도로 받아주시면 감사할 것 같습니다. 일단 단도직입적으로 이야기를 시작하자면 전 필름의 감성을 좋아하지만 필름사진이 최고라고 생각하지 않습니다. 게다가 필름카메라가 만드는 느낌을 디지털 작업을 통해서 100퍼센트는 아니어도 80~90은 구현할 수 있다고 생각을 합니다. 사실 제가 이런 이야기를 몇번 사람들에게 털어놓았을때 반응은 극과 극이었는데 제 말에 설득당하는 사람과 필름의 가치를 모른다고 제가 질책하는 사람들로 나뉘었습니다. 저를 질책하는 사람들이 제게 한 말들을 정리하자면 아래와 같습니다.
- 필름 카메라로 사진을 찍으면 보정을 하지 않아도 감성적인 사진이 나온다.
- 필름으로 사진을 찍으면 확인을 바로 할 수 없기 때문에 좀 더 집중해서 사진을 찍을 수 있다.
- 이미지 센서가 아무리 좋아져도 필름이 가지는 색감이나 계조를 표현할 수 없다.
- 필름으로 사진을 찍고 기다리는 시간은 그 무엇보다 즐겁다.
- 필름의 종류에 따라 예상하지 못하는 재밌는 사진이 나온다.
- 등등...
다른 이야기들도 많았지만 위의 말들이 가장 많이 들은 이야기이기 때문에 저의 생각을 하나하나 답해보겠습니다.
- 디지털 사진만큼 보정의 영역이 크지는 않지만 물론 필름사진도 보정을 합니다. 현상과 인화과정에서 작가의 의도에 따른 보정을 하게 되어있어요. 현상액의 약품의 비율에 따라 대비가 변하고 현상액의 온도에 따라서도 사진의 암부와 명부의 농도차이를 보이기도 합니다. 인화과정에서도 보정이 들어가는 것은 당연합니다. 그리고 다른 무수히 많은 보정법도 있는데 예를 들면 유섭카쉬 같은 사진의 대가도 2개의 현상물을 오려 붙여서 인화하는 작업도 하곤 했습니다.
- 맞는 말입니다. 물론 확인을 당장 할 수 없기에 좀 더 집중해서 사진을 찍게 되죠. 하지만 제가 반대로 묻겠습니다. 사진 하나하나 집중해서 촬영을 하지 않는 다면 사진가라 할수 있을 까요? 프로이든 아마추어이든 상관없습니다. 카메라를 든 사진가라면 모든 사진에 집중을 하여 촬영을 해야합니다. 물론 처음 연습을 할때 필름 카메라를 사용하면 사진에 대한 좋은 습관을 기를수 있습니다.
- 이거는 초기 디지털 센서에 해당되는 이야기이므로 논쟁할 가치가 없습니다. 지금 디지털 센서가 더 많은 보정영역과 표현영역을 가지고 있습니다. 비교가 불가능합니다. 그리고 애초에 필름사진의 특이하고 아름다운 계조와 느낌이라는 것이 현상후 디지털화 시켜서 컴퓨터파일로 저장해버리면 의미가 없어집니다. 결국 컴퓨터가 다시 그 현상물을 계산해서 디지털화 해버리기 때문이죠. 필름사진은 필름을 현상시켜서 인화지에 인화를 했을때 비로소 그 가치를 나타냅니다.
- 이것은 사진을 어떤 관점으로 대하느냐의 차이 같습니다. 정말 나만의 작품을 만들고 싶다면 기다리는 시간은 디지털이든 필름이든 좋을리가 없습니다. 필름으로 사진을 찍어도 자신이 직접 현상하고 인화해서 작품을 만들고 싶지 않을까요? 다니 추억 저장용으로 사진을 찍는 다면 현상소에 맡겨도 되겠지만은 필름작업을 하는 분들은 분명 그 순간을 기다림의 순간이라고 이야기 하지 않을겁니다.
- 필름의 종류에 따라 사진이 달라지는 것이 맞습니다. 그런데 하나 묻고 싶은게 있습니다. 디지털로 촬영하고 보정하여 느낌을 만드는 것과 자신이 좋아하는 필름의 느낌을 이용하기 위해 필름을 바꾸는 것 어떤 차이가 있을까요? 어떤식으로든 사진가의 의도가 들어가는 것이라면 결코 예상치 못한 결과물이 아니라고 생각합니다.
- 제가 가끔 사진의 색감을 만들때는 필름의 색감을 참고하기도 합니다. 같은 피사체를 같은 렌즈와 구도로 촬영을 하고 두 사진을 비교하면서 색감을 만들어 냅니다. 이런 작업을 할때마다 느끼는 거지만 분명 필름의 색은 디지털보다 색영역이 좁거나 특정색의 고대비 그리고 암부와 명부의 대비에서 많이 결정된다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 물론 다른 요소들도 많습니다. 예들들어 비네팅을 들 수 있습니다.
결론을 이야기하자면 필름사진이든 디지털사진이든 우열을 가리기는 어렵습니다. 하지만 디지털사진을 찍고 보정을 제대로 하지 않으면 작품이 되지 않듯이 필름사진도 현상과 인화를 제대로 작업을 하지 않고 업체에 맡겨버리면 필름사진으로써의 의미가 없다는 것입니다.

- Time to take a picture with film and wait is more enjoyable than anything else.
- Depending on the type of film, unexpected funny pictures are concluded.

There were a lot of other stories, but since the above are the ones I have heard the most, let me answer my thoughts one by one.
- The area of calibration is not as large as the digital photo, but of course the film picture is calibrated. In the course of development and printing, photography is edited. The contrast varies with the proportion of solution, and there are also differences in concentrations between the highlight and shadow by the temperature of the developing solution. the calibration also is included in the printing process. And there are a lot of other editing ways, for example, the maestro like Yousuf Karsh, which used to be to cut and paste and print two things.
- That's right. Of course, I can't check right away, so I'm going to focus on taking pictures. But let me ask you. If you don't focus on each picture, can you say yourself you're a photographer. It doesn't matter whether you're a pro or an amateur. If you're a photographer with a camera, you should focus on all of your photos and take them. Of course, using a film camera on your first practice can help you make a good habit about photography.
- This is an early digital sensor and is not worth arguing about. Digital sensors now have more calibration and representation areas. Unable to compare. And the unique and beautiful sense and feel of film photography are digitalized when you save your photo in your computer. Because the computer is going to calculate the contrast,brightness,clarity and others of picture and digitize it. Film photography only shows its value when it is developed and printed on a printed sheet.
- This is depend on what is your photography's purpose. If you really want to make your own work, waiting time can not be good, whether digital or film. Photographer definitely will want to edit and develop their photo themselves. If you take pictures for your memories, you can leave them with a photo lab, but for your film work will? maybe you cannot.
- The photos vary depending on the type of film. But I want to ask you something. What's the difference between being digitally filmed and calibrated to create feelings and changing the film to use the feel of your favorite film? I don't think it's an unexpected outcome if the photographer's intent is to be in any way.
- I sometimes study the color of the film when I make new colors. Take a picture of the same subject with the same lens and compose and I compare two pictures and make. and I realize something every time when I do this. it is that the color of the film clearly depends on a smaller dynamic range and color area than digital, or on the high contrast of certain colors, and on the contrast of the shadow and highlight. Of course there are many other factors. For example, there is the vignetting.
To conclude it's hard to tell which one is better between film and digital. However, film photography does not become a photography if you didn't properly develop and print like non edited digital photography is not a photography.
