Hello, another day, another coin. Today I’d like to show you a recent addition to my collection – specifically, a lovely circulating coin from the US. I bought the coin at a market in a small town called Działdowo. I can safely say I’ve got a new hobby, which involves wandering around local markets looking for antiques. As well as coins, this time I found a stall selling other antiques, where a couple had a few original glass hens from the Ząbkowice glassworks for sale. These are one of the most sought-after collectables from communist-era Poland. Their prices range from $250 to several thousand dollars. Returning to coins, I made a slightly smaller purchase from this gentleman, as I had to sift through a mass of copper-nickel and counterfeits, but someone with a keen eye will always find something interesting. One Dollar 1925 This is the One Dollar 1925, also known as the Peace Dollar. The coin is one of the most popular types of American silver dollars, and to be honest, that doesn’t surprise me at all, because this coin has everything I like in circulation numismatics. It’s a good size, has a decent silver content, is clearly legible, attractive, and, what’s more, it isn’t some modern invention made solely to look good in a display case. It was a normal coin that circulated and could have passed through thousands of hands. The Peace Dollar was created after the First World War, at a time when the world was trying to return to some semblance of normality following the immense tragedy known at the time as the Great War. The very name of this coin is no coincidence, as it was intended to symbolise peace and a new chapter in history. All in all, it is interesting that so much meaning can be encapsulated in an ordinary circulation coin. It is just a dollar, just an ordinary denomination, and yet behind this silver disc lies an entire era, the mood of the people, politics and the need to show that a more peaceful era was beginning. If only they had known how wrong they were. My specimen dates from 1925 and was struck in Philadelphia, which is why there is no mint mark on it. This year is not particularly rare, but that is precisely what makes it such a pleasure to collect. You don’t have to sell a kidney to have a classic US silver dollar in your collection, and the satisfaction is still very great. On the obverse, we see the head of Liberty facing left. Her hair is flowing, rays emanate from her head, and you can immediately see that the Americans liked to do things their own way – a bit boldly, a bit symbolically – but you have to admit that the effect is very good. At the top is the inscription LIBERTY, at the bottom the year 1925, and on the sides the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST. All in all, it’s a seemingly simple design, but it has a certain something about it and looks much better in the flesh than in photos. The reverse is also very pleasing, as we see an eagle perched on a rock, holding an olive branch, with the inscription ‘PEACE’ at the bottom. And this is probably the best feature of this coin, because you immediately know what it’s all about. There is no aggression here, no great struggle, nor any excessive scheming. There is an eagle, there is peace, there is fine silver, and there is a great atmosphere. My copy isn’t perfect, of course, as it’s seen a bit of circulation, but to be honest, that’s exactly the sort of coin I like. When a coin is a bit worn, I immediately start wondering where it’s been, who’s held it, how many times someone’s paid with it, and how on earth it ended up at a small market in Działdowo after all these years. Perhaps to some it’s just an ordinary dollar, but to me it’s a piece of history you can actually hold in your hand. And I think that’s precisely why I really like circulation coins – because they aren’t lifeless. They really did once live amongst people. Dziś chciałbym wam przedstawić świeży nabytek w kolekcji, a dokładniej coś miłego obiegowego ze stanów. Monetkę kupiłem na targu w małym miasteczku o nazwie Działdowo. Mogę stwierdzić, że mam nowe hobby, które to polega na chodzeniu po ryneczkach i szukaniu staroci. Oprócz monet tym razem znalazłem stanowisko z innymi antykami, gdzie małżeństwo posiadało na sprzedaż kilka oryginalnych szklanych kur z huty Ząbkowice. Jest to jeden z bardzo poszukiwanych smaczków z Polski komunistycznej. Jej ceny osiągają od 250 dolarów do kilku tysięcy. Wracając do monet, to u tego pana zrobiłem trochę mniejsze zakupy, gdyż musiałem przebierać przez masę miedzioniklu i podróbek, ale osoba z dobrym okiem zawsze coś ciekawego znajdzie. One Dollar 1925 Jest to One Dollar 1925, znany również pod nazwą dolar pokoju. Moneta należy do jednego z tych najbardziej lubianych typów srebrnych dolarów amerykańskich i powiem szczerze, że wcale mnie to nie dziwi, bo ten krążek ma w sobie wszystko, co lubię w numizmatyce obiegowej. Jest spory, ma ładną próbę srebra, jest czytelny, ładny i do tego nie jest jakimś współczesnym wynalazkiem robionym tylko po to, aby ładnie wyglądał w zamkniętym kapslu. To była normalna moneta, która funkcjonowała w obiegu i mogła przechodzić przez tysiące łapek. Peace Dollar powstał po pierwszej wojnie światowej, czyli w czasie, kiedy świat próbował jakoś wrócić do normalności po ogromnej tragedii, którą to w czasach ówczesnych nazywano wielką wojną. Sama nazwa tej monety nie jest przypadkowa, bo miała ona symbolizować pokój i nowy etap w historii. W sumie jest to ciekawe, że na zwykłej monecie obiegowej można zamknąć tak dużo treści. Niby tylko dolar, niby zwykły nominał, a jednak za tym srebrnym krążkiem stoi cała epoka, nastroje ludzi, polityka i potrzeba pokazania, że zaczyna się coś spokojniejszego. Gdyby oni wiedzieli jak bardzo się mylili. Mój egzemplarz pochodzi z 1925 roku i został wybity w Filadelfii, dlatego nie znajdziemy na nim znaku mennicy. Rocznik ten nie jest jakąś ogromną rzadkością, ale właśnie przez to jest bardzo przyjemny do zbierania. Nie trzeba sprzedawać nerki, żeby mieć w kolekcji klasycznego srebrnego dolara ze stanów, a satysfakcja i tak jest naprawdę spora. Na awersie mamy głowę Wolności zwróconą w lewą stronę. Włosy są rozwiane, z głowy wychodzą promienie i od razu widać, że Amerykanie lubili robić rzeczy po swojemu, trochę mocno, trochę symbolicznie, ale trzeba przyznać, że efekt jest bardzo dobry. U góry znajduje się napis LIBERTY, na dole rok 1925, a po bokach napis IN GOD WE TRUST. W sumie niby prosty projekt, ale ma coś w sobie i na żywo wygląda dużo lepiej niż na zdjęciach. Rewers też jest bardzo przyjemny, bo widzimy orła siedzącego na skale, z gałązką oliwną, a na dole znajduje się napis PEACE. I to jest chyba najlepszy element tej monety, bo od razu wiadomo, o co tutaj chodzi. Nie ma tutaj agresji, wielkiej walki ani przesadnego kombinowania. Jest orzeł, jest spokój, jest dobre srebro i jest super klimat. Mój egzemplarz oczywiście nie jest idealny, bo coś niecoś obiegu już widział, ale powiem szczerze, że właśnie takie monety lubię. Jak moneta jest trochę przetarta, to od razu zaczynam sobie myśleć, gdzie ona była, kto ją trzymał, ile razy ktoś nią zapłacił i jakim cudem po tylu latach trafiła na mały targ w Działdowie. Może dla kogoś to tylko zwykły dolar, ale dla mnie jest to kawałek historii, który można normalnie wziąć do ręki. I chyba właśnie za to naprawdę lubię monety obiegowe, bo nie są martwe. One naprawdę kiedyś żyły między ludźmi.
