Before revealing it´s your turn. What do you think is the loudest animal?

Maybe you might think of the howler monkey, that lives up to his name pretty well. But still there are even louder species out there. One of them is the sperm whale that can produce clicks of a few ms that have a sound pressure level of 200 dB. The other species is the one who this post is dedicated mostly: The pistol shrimp (Alphaeidae)

A short excursion into sound pressure level:

Decibel describes the logarithmic ratio between two values. In the case of sound pressure level we compare the sound incident, that level we want to determine, with the treshold of human hearing in air (p0=20 µPa). With the help of this size we can dtermine the sound level pressure of the investigated source (normally the measurement is made in a distance of 1m to the sound source).

Example of sound pressure levels:

speech: 50 dB
disco/club: 100 dB
gunshot140 dB
howler monkey 140 dB
eardrum rupture: 160dB
lung rupture: 185 dB
pistol shrimp: 200 dB
sperm whale: 230 dB

doubling factor:

+10 dB sound pressure level is percieved by humans as doubled loudness

Neverthe less it has to be said, that still this value is not something you can take for granted while comparing sound levels. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts (What do cats and dogs actually hear) the human ear can only hear frequencies between 20 and 20 000 Hz. The noises of the shrimp go far beneath this number and exceed even 200kHz.

So how can this small animal create such a loud noise?

The right clippers of the shrimp can be closed so quickly, that water is being shot away, that has a speed of more than 100 km/h (62 mph). This creates a bubble because the waterpressure is going down rapidly. Normally water vaporizes at 100°Celsius. With less pressure 20°C might be enough. Emitting light this also creates heat points that can be as warm as 4700°C.

What is all this for?

With such an attack, the shrimp puts his prey (sometimes much bigger then itself) to sleep or even kills smaller fish
It uses it as a way of communication
Duels are being held, like in a western movie (but underwater) comparing the effect of their weapons

There has not been found an organ to hear sonic
If put into glass boxes the shrimp is capable of destroying them
the sound of the shrimp´s pistol shots interfere with the submarine´s sonar system

Zuerst bist du gefragt. An welches Tier denkst du bei dieser Überschrift?

Vielleicht denkst du an den Brüllaffen, der seinem Namen auch alle Ehre macht, aber noch übertroffen wird von zwei anderen Spezien. Die eine ist der Pottwal und die andere ist eine viel kleinere Kreatur, der dieser Artikel eigentlich gewidmet ist: Der Pistolenkrebs oder auch Knallkrebs.

Kurzer physikalischer Ausflug ins Dezibel Land:

Dezibel beschreibt das logarithmische Verhältnis zweier Größen. In unserem Beispiel wird dabei der Schalldruck L_p zu einer Bezugsgröße p0 in Verhältnis gestellt. p0 ist die Hörschwelle (also ab wann wir ein Schallereignis wahrnehmen) und liegt bei einem Druck von 20 µPa. Mit Hilfe dieses Referenzwertes bewerten wir nun verschiedene Schallereignisse (normalerweise im Abstand von 1m):

Beispiele:

Sprache: 50 dB
Diskothek: 100 dB
Gewehrschuss 140 dB
Brüllaffe:
Trommelfellrisse: 160dB
Lungenrisse: 185 dB
Pistolenkrebs/Knallkrebs: 200 dB
Pottwal: 230 dB

Verdoppelung:

+10 dB werden vom Menschen ungefähr als doppelte Lautstärke wahrgenommen

Die Aussagekraft des Schalldruckpegels alleine, ist trotzdem kritisch aufzufassen, da noch viele andere Einflüsse für die von uns empfundene Lautstärke verantwortlich sind. Wie bereits in meinem früheren Artikel (Was hören Hund und Katz?) erwähnt, hört der Mensch nur in einem Frequenzbereich von ca. 20-20000Hz. Die von den Tieren ausgestoßenen Laute reichen aber teilweise über diese Grenzen hinaus.

Wie schafft es dieses kleine Krebschen jetzt so laut zu sein?

Es schließt die Scheren an der Schusshand so schnell, dass eine Kavitationsblase entsteht. Das bedeutet, dass durch den niedrigen Druck die Dampfbildung von Wasser stattfindet (normalerweise verdampft Wasser bei ca. 100° Celsius, bei geringem Druck jedoch auch schon bei 20°). Diese Blase implodiert nach Auftreten, wodurch extreme Temperaturen (an kleinen Stellen 4700°C) entstehen.

Wozu das ganze?

Der Krebs betäubt damit seine Beute, welche teilweise viel größer als er selbst ist.
kleine Fische können sogar durch den Angriff getötet werden
Außerdem verwendet der Krebs den Knall für die Kommunikation mir seinen Artgenossen
Wie im wilden (Unterwasser)Western werden auch Duelle zwischen den Krebsen ausgetragen.

Fun Facts:

Bisher wurde bei diesen Tieren kein Organ für Schallwahrnehmung gefunden
In ein Glasgefäß gesetzt kann der Pistolenkrebs dieses zerstören
Erstmals aufgefallen sind die Krebse, da sie die Sonarsysteme von U-Booten störten
