A century ago, the province of La Pampa was so full of caldenes that there were entire areas (hundreds of hectares) populated only by this species, giving rise to what came to be called "el caldenal" - that is, a place where there are many caldenes.

The indiscriminate logging and the monoculture of some cereals and oilseeds led to its near extinction in less than a century.
