This event is the longest running longboarding event in the world, a core event of the Canadian scene, and basically the event that birthed the current longboarding scene around the world.
As a long time longboarder, this event had always been on my bucket list, but I never actually got to attend until 3 years ago due to the long distance it took to get there.
Of course for those who follow my story know, I quit my job 3 years ago, and this was the first event I went to with my new found free time!
What I found was the most supportive community I've ever met in the longboarding world, and the whole town basically comes out to watch this race! While the hill itself isn't the most challenging race, getting through Carnage Corner can live up to it's name, and this makes or breaks riders runs! I was lucky enough to be front row for most of the action, as you'll see with the ton of crashes I filmed for the middle of the video. Thankfully only a few injuries as a result, but still not something anyone want to see.
Well as I mentioned, there was a ton of crashes, but thankfully only a couple injuries. The main one was Max Kaye, as friend of mine, and the organizer of the Salt Spring Slasher. I blocked it out in the video, but he broke his ankle, and femur in the crash. Then another skater made it worse when he hit his ankle with his board, and further dislocated it! Thankfully it looks like he's making a full recovery.
Thanks again to Striker for the decades of dedication too this sport, and I'm so glad I could support this event, and him with a SkateHive sponsorship. Even if I paid it out of pocket, I'm happy to support him, and I'm thankful for all the support from the SkateHive community which allowed me to do that.
