Genator interface

Okay, this one got my attention for a weird reason. Genator from Sound Overflow does not ask you to build a patch knob by knob. You describe the sound you want by picking a family, an ambience, a mood and an era, and its local rule engine builds the whole patch for you, oscillators right through to reverb. No cloud, no account, no waiting on a server. You pick an intention, it builds the sound.

Under the hood it is a proper 24 voice subtractive engine with four oscillators, unison, a resonant state variable filter, envelopes, LFO and a sub. And it runs two complete engines side by side, so you can crossfade between two totally different sounds in real time. That is the part my industrial brain latched onto. Picture a clean choir pad melting into a grinding, detuned wall of noise mid track. The 14 live macros help here too: Density, Space, Motion, Grain, Warmth, Brightness, plus Chaos, Human, Filter, Age, Reso, Sub, Attack and Release. Twist Chaos and Grain and things get ugly fast, in a good way.

It also plays on its own with no MIDI input, thanks to a built in sequencer with Pulse, Arp, Random, Chord and Custom modes across 49 scales. And there is a vocal tract made of five formant resonators that turns the whole synth into a choir. Evolve and Inspire modes keep the sound shifting by itself, and every patch is rebuildable from a 32 bit seed, so an intention plus a seed gives you the exact same sound again. 240 level matched factory presets come with it, plus effects in six routings.

One honest note: Genator itself first came out for Windows on October 2, and this week brought the macOS release, version 1.0.2. So this is fresh news for Mac users rather than a brand new instrument, but the idea is still one of the most fun ones I have seen in a while.

Price: on sale at 69 EUR (regular 99 EUR) until November 1, 2026, with a free demo that gives you 2 hours of sound and asks for no card. macOS VST3/AU/standalone and Windows VST3/standalone.
