The LinnDrum, or LM-2, is the 1982 successor to the LM-1 and arguably the most iconic drum machine of the 1980s. Unlike its predecessors, it used 8-bit digital samples of real drums, providing a punchy, realistic sound that defined hits by Prince, Michael Jackson, and Tears for Fears.
It features 15 programmable sounds, including a signature snare and tunable toms, along with individual outputs for professional studio mixing. A major innovation was its "swing" setting, which gave programmed beats a more human feel. With only about 5,000 units made, original machines are now rare collector's items, often selling for $7,000 to $15,000+ depending on their condition and MIDI modifications
