SquelchGlide: a free acid box that squelches like it means it
You know the sound I am chasing. That greasy resonant bassline that sits under everything and makes the kick feel twice as heavy. SquelchGlide is a free little box from Japanese indie dev hirokutsu that does exactly that one thing, and it does it with real conviction.
The path is the classic one. Two oscillators into a shared 2-pole resonant lowpass. That is the whole signal chain, and honestly that is all an acid bassline ever needed. You get accent and slide controls for proper 303-style expression, plus a built-in 16-step sequencer that locks to your DAW. Punch in a pattern, crank the resonance, ride the cutoff, and you are in business. The UI is a wood-paneled little rack unit with a vintage feel. It looks like it belongs in a bedroom studio in 1986, and I mean that as a compliment.
Here is the part that made me smile. SquelchGlide did not drop alone. It came with two free siblings. FourpoleGlide is a fat mono bass with three stacked oscillators feeding a 4-pole 24 dB lowpass, and PolyMusubi is an 8-voice polysynth with a DCO-style mixer, poly mod, a 24 dB ladder filter, and a stereo chorus. A whole little gift drop, all free. The poly is eligible for a future review on its own, so stay tuned.
Honest notes, because there are always some. This is Windows VST3 only, 64-bit, no Mac or Linux builds. There is no preset manager mentioned anywhere, so you roll your own patches, which for a synth this narrow is no real hardship. It is also v1.0.0, so it is a young plugin. But it is free, the download is a tiny 6.4 MB, and it does exactly what the name says.
For industrial and EBM-leaning producers, a free acid bassline box is basically catnip. SquelchGlide nails the one thing it promises.
