HOLODRIFT by Blinksonic

So Blinksonic just dropped their first instrument and it is absolutely my kind of mess. HOLODRIFT is a granular sampler bolted onto a real-time spectral resynthesis engine. Feed it a field recording, a metal hit, a dead voicemail, whatever. It tears the sound into partials and rebuilds it continuously while you abuse it.

The core idea is eight granular sampler slots, each one a full granular engine in its own right. Whole samples, loop slices, your own recordings, or live input straight off the interface. Grains run from a few milliseconds up to a full second, and you can slow things down, stop them dead, run them backwards, timestretch without changing pitch, or scatter everything into a grain cloud. Then there is the JOURNEY concept: one position glides across the eight slots, crossfading one material into the next. Drive it by hand on the XY pad, by LFO, note by note, or let it run automatically. There is an INERTIA control too, from a quick 80 milliseconds up to a full minute of travel time. Set it slow and watch a riff melt into drone over an entire set.

The spectral side is where it gets genuinely interesting for the industrial crowd. The engine breaks the sound into partials and rebuilds it live, with 17 frame processors to mangle it: CHASER, FRAGMENT, TIME SHUFFLE, SCRAMBLER, FREEZE, DISPERSE, that kind of thing. In WAVE mode every partial gets replayed through a wavetable of your choice with 128 harmonics, and IMPRINT lays the original sample's formants over the rebuilt partials. The vendor describes GRIT as an actual design goal here: the roughness of real-time resynthesis that dirties everything but stays organic. That plus a DIRT tape machine with nine saturation models and a bed of noise on top. Yeah. This thing was made for the texture-obsessed.

Then the end of the chain keeps it playable instead of just a noise box: polyphonic AUTOTUNE across 24 scales, a 16-string sympathetic RESONATOR, a delay that runs inside the FFT engine with repeats that climb the scale, two reverbs, a resonant band filter, and a 3-band compressor with stereo width on the output. There is a looper and slicer too, always listening, grab the last few bars with CAPTURE, and it probabilistically remixes its own output with RND slice, repeat, pitch, scratch, reverse, and stutter. It comes with 1,360 sounds in 16 collections laid out on a timbre map (you literally lasso a region to fill all eight slots at once) and 240 presets in 13 banks, but honestly the fun is dropping your own mangled files in.

Honest note: this is a brand-new company's debut instrument, so day-one risk is real. But the free 9-day demo is fully unlocked, so trying it costs nothing. Launch price is 119 EUR until October 30 with the code L4UNCH (regular price 159 EUR). Runs as VST3, AU, CLAP, and standalone on macOS and Windows.

Price: 119 EUR launch price until October 30, 2026 (regular 159 EUR); free 9-day demo with everything unlocked.
