Apollon: A Free Virtual Analog Drum Machine With a Built-In Step Sequencer
Tonight is a drum machine night, and this one is a proper little analog style box. Apollon by Synsonic Instruments is a free virtual analog drum machine with a built in step sequencer, and it used to cost 20 bucks before the developer made it free at the start of 2026. You still get the full version, and the product page includes a free activation key to unlock it.
One honest note up front: Apollon is not a clone of one specific box. It is inspired by the early analog drum machines of the 808 era, and it works the way those machines did. Every sound is synthesized, not sampled, so you get eight instruments that behave like real analog voices: bass drum, snare, low tom, high tom, closed and open hi-hats, clap, and rimshot. Each one has simple controls for things like tuning and decay, so you can shape a sound fast without digging through menus.
The best part is the built in 16 step sequencer. The steps are velocity sensitive and you can set a different shuffle amount per instrument, which is a really nice touch for getting grooves that feel human instead of stiff. There is also a simple reverb and delay with send levels per instrument, and you can trigger every sound over MIDI if you would rather sequence everything in your DAW.
It is a small, focused tool and that is the point. Load it up, punch in a pattern, tweak the decay on the kick and the tuning on the toms, and you have a beat that sounds like it came out of a hardware box from 1982.
Here is a video walking through Apollon and the other Synsonic drum plugins:
Download it free here:

How to install:
Windows: Grab it free from the product page and copy the activation key shown there. Run the installer, it installs the 64-bit VST2 plugin, then enter the key when asked and rescan your plugins in your DAW. You will need a 64-bit host that supports VST2.
Mac: Same deal, download the Mac installer from the product page, run it, enter the free activation key, and rescan. It installs VST2 and AU formats for 64-bit hosts. Note there is no stated native Apple Silicon support, so check it runs on your setup.
Linux: Not supported, Windows and Mac only on this one.
No ROM or firmware files are needed at all, this one just works straight out of the box.
If your beats feel too clean and sample pack perfect, give Apollon a spin. It costs nothing and it is the closest thing to a little analog drum box you can get without buying the hardware.
