In North America, Great Horned Owls hoot at dawn and dusk, or both. Some other owls normally wait until well after dark to call; Eastern and Western Screech-Owls and Northern Saw-whet Owls typically follow this pattern. Barred Owls often call during the middle of the day, especially early in the breeding season.
