The forth video of the series The Art of Gold Mining by BogiZimlja.
Unedited video scenes of life and gold mining-prospecting in Western Australia. Never Can Tell mine area, Nicholas Stee & Ludwig working on joining up surface shoot of gold with old stope from circa 1970's. Never Can Tell area was discovered by Steve Earl in about 1955. Cyril Barnes came around to my camp at Redcastle. I am camped at the "Never Can Tell" mine on the opposite side of the dry watercourse there. He told me gold was found here at the same time as the Goanna Patch (north of Leonora). That means it must be in 1955 if I am not mistaken. Steve Earl found it. He came back to the musterers camp and the deep pockets of his old army greatcoat were full of nuggets, Cyril recounts. I asked him who named it "never can tell"? He said old Steve Earl meant "don't tell anyone" but in his bad English he kept saying "Never Can Tell" and the name stuck.
Arthur Newland dug the shaft there in early seventies. He got a tub full of gold specimens.
The old mine shaft is only 4.5m deep and you can see it in this video.
