That's madness. I imagine it would make quite an interesting long exposure photograph. Also reminds me of the video game, Supreme Commander - a spiritual successor to Total Anohiliation - where you could have shield generators that worked in a similar way to defend your bases / units - the only thing that would bring down such a thing is a cutting the power.
